Accident and Sickness Insurance Policies
In today's financial climate lots of people are afraid they will be unable to meet commitments such as mortgage repayments, loans and credit cards should they be left off work for an extended period of time.
One solution is an accident and sickness insurance policy which pays out a set amount of cash every month you are out of work for a specified amount of time (usually 12 months but some policies cover up to 24 months).
However there is certain requirements that need to be met in order to claim on this type of policy.
First of all the client must be in employment over 16 hours and have been so for at least 6 months. They must then wait a deferred period of time before the benefit is paid In some cases insurers will back pay the monthly benefit but you will still have to wait till you have been off work due to sickness for at least 4 weeks. This is to reduce the number of claims due to people taking a few days or even weeks off due to illness.
Another major exclusion is self-inflicted injuries or injuries picked up from a sporting event deemed to be dangerous. Accidents that take place while under the influence of illegal drugs or heavy alcohol will also be excluded.
Stress related conditions, back conditions or AIDS related illnesses may also not be classed as sickness under the terms of the policy. Also injuries arising from a pre-existing medical condition may be excluded when the policy is but into place.
